Crushing debt kills . . .
On the eve of the IMF/World Bank 2001 Spring
Meetings demand
100%
debt cancellation, an end to structural adjustment!
Thousands of children
die everyday, 19,000 daily in Africa alone - loan payments to wealthy
creditors are prioritized before health care, education and food security
for the poor;
Tanzania:
spends 9 times more on debt than health; 40% of population dies before
age 35;
one
out of 20 African mothers dies at childbirth while 17% of Africa=s children
die before the age of five
Haiti:
in 2000 spent $30 million for debt servicing and $1.2 million for the
Ministry of Environment;
Zambia: 20% of the population is HIV positive, the government spends
$17 per person on health and $30 per person on debt service to creditors;
Niger: less than 20% of young women in schools, more is spent on debt
than on education and health;
for
every $1.00 in aid to impoverished countries, $1.30 flows back in debt
service payments. (The LIVE AID concert raised $200 million for Africa
- that much flows out of Africa weekly in debt repayments); and
cuts in food subsidies, cuts in credit for farmers, and cash crop farming
emphasizes non-food cash crops and condemns millions, especially children
to hunger, malnutrition, and death.
