CALENDAR OF EVENTS AND ACTIONS

Calendar of Events, March 31-April 16, 2005

Thursday, March 31st
10 am One-Horse Race Picket :: World Bank Headquarters :: 18th and H Sts, NW

On March 31st, the Board of Directors of the World Bank will meet to approve Paul Wolfowitz, the architect of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq, as the next President of the World Bank. In addition to helping mislead the American public into supporting the invasion of Iraq, Wolfowitz has no experience in international development, aside from a few years as Ambassador to Indonesia, during which he was reported to be very close to the dictator Suharto.

The nomination of Wolfowitz and the grudging acceptance the Bush Administration has arm-twisted from the Europeans is yet another symptom of the lack of democracy and transparency in the governance of the World Bank and IMF.

At 10 am, join us for a one-horse race and demand democracy and transparency at the World Bank and IMF!

Thursday, April 7th :: 6pm Film Screening
The Festival Center :: 1640 Columbia Rd, NW
"The African Fiber"

Join filmmaker Francoise Champey for a film examining trade, globalization, and their effects on small-scale cotton farmers in Africa. Reception with refreshments to follow. $5 suggested donation, no one turned away.

Saturday, April 9th :: 1pm Film Screening
The Festival Center :: 1640 Columbia Rd, NW
"To Be a Woman"

The policies of the World Bank and the IMF devastate the lives of women, children, and the poor in the Global South. This film examines issues of international debt and development through the stories of the women in three African countries who are struggling to survive being “structurally adjusted.” $5 suggested donation, no one turned away.

Saturday, April 9th :: 3pm Film Screening
The Festival Center :: 1640 Columbia Rd, NW
"Thirst"

Population growth, pollution, and scarcity are turning water into "blue gold," the oil of the 21st century. Global corporations are rushing to gain control of this dwindling natural resource, producing intense conflict in the US and worldwide where people are dying in battles over control of water. Thirst follows the story of resistance in Bolivia, India, and California. $5 suggested donation, no one turned away.

Friday, April 15th :: Noon Rally
US Treasury :: 15th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW

The Group of 7 (G7) Finance Ministers – from the seven wealthiest and most powerful countries – meet in Washington in advance of the meetings of the World Bank and IMF. The 50 Years Is Enough Network, Jubilee USA Network, the Religious Working Group on the World Bank and IMF, American Friends Service Committee, Africa Action, and the Mobilization for Global Justice continue to demand 100% debt cancellation, for all countries, with no externally-imposed conditions!

The G7 countries are the de facto masters of the World Bank and IMF. Their decision on debt cancellation will affect millions of people in the Global South – people who are denied access to healthcare, education, and other essential services because their governments spend already limited resources on servicing often illegitimate debt. The G7 countries have already agreed to cancel 80% Iraq's foreign debt – at the behest of the US – and have delayed repayments from tsunami-affected countries, but that is not enough. The G7, the World Bank, and the IMF must cancel 100% of the debts held by countries in crisis – in economic crisis, in humanitarian crisis, in the HIV/AIDS crisis!

Local to Local Connections: Linking Community Issues Globally

St Stephen's Church :: 16th and Newton Sts, NW
The issues we face here in DC are the same issues people are struggling with all over the world: Gentrification and displacement – Affordable housing - Forced immigration - Workers' rights - Access to public healthcare and education - Privatization of public services.

Come take part in an evening of dialogue among DC residents and organizers from Latin America, Africa and Asia, including Virginia Setshedi, from the Anti-Privatisation Forum (South Africa). Join us in sharing struggles, ideas and solidarity as we find our common ground! The event will take place on the eve of the protests of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) spring meetings here in DC.

Sponsored by: Project South, Jobs with Justice, DC Healthcare Coalition, Critical Resistance and the Mobilization for Global Justice.

Directions: St. Stephen's Church, 16th and Newton NW. From the Columbia Heights metro walk north on 14th, turn left on Newton and walk until you reach 16th. Enter on the side. There is wheelchair access at the back of the building.

Saturday, April 16th :: Noon Protest
World Bank and IMF Headquarters :: 18th St. and Pennsylvania Ave., NW
1 pm March to Dupont Circle, where A Better World Is Under Construction!

Gather in front of the World Bank and IMF Headquarters at noon for speakers, music and street theater as the Mobilization for Global Justice and partner organizations present a structural evaluation of the World Bank and IMF, the loan sharks to the Global South. We will turn our backs on the institutions as failed models of development and tools of global apartheid and economic imperialism, and march into the community to take part in the construction of a better world that is already under way! At Dupont Circle, learn about movements of resistance and rebuilding that are taking place in the Global South, in the US, and right here in Washington; and celebrate with more music, poetry, and speakers.
