gather in Washington to protest IMF policies -- As
International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank officials
gathered here, activists from around the world marched to
the IMF headquarters to protest the institutions' lending
policies.
To the chant of "Break the chains of debt, now!,"
about 200 protesters, some carrying papier-mache puppets
of IMF Managing Director Michel Camdessus, World Bank President
James Wolfensohn and Uncle Sam, demanded that the IMF and
the World Bank cancel the debt that poor countries owe to
international institutions.
